The Newcomen Engine Demonstration: 12 noon

Demonstrations of the Newcomen Engine at Elsecar start this year on Easter Sunday (5 April at 12 noon and 2pm).

The Engine at Elsecar is the oldest atmospheric engine still in its original location in the world! Invented by Thomas Newcomen to pump water from the coal mines, it was known as the first ever practical engine.

Learn more about this fascinating invention, its story at Elsecar and how it would have worked. Restored in 2014 and now using a hydraulic system to preserve the engine, the engine house continues to be maintained and looked after by our volunteers.

The tour lasts one hour and costs £8 per person. Please note the building has two narrow staircases and a deep step to enter.
