New Reyt Royal Tours for Elsecar

New ‘Reyt Royal Elsecar!’ guided tours launched for the King’s Coronation!

Taking place at 2pm every Saturday and Sunday, visitors will be guided around the village to discover amazing secrets and Royal connections.

People will hear about Royal visits to this very special village that have taken place over almost 200 years.

Built to be shown off, the Earls Fitzwilliam brought aristocrats and Royalty to Elsecar. They gazed at glowing furnaces that reached high into the sky. They marveled at spectacular architecture, industry and extraordinary innovation.

They even went deep into the village collieries, including the first Royals to venture underground anywhere in the UK. In 1851, Queen Victoria was taken outside the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace, to see a giant column of coal taken there especially from Elsecar!

Other tours and special events will be taking place throughout the summer including Great Engine Demonstrations and History Hikes.

Jon Finch, Head of Culture and Visitor Economy, said: “Elsecar is the perfect place to spend the Coronation weekend. Royal connections to the area date back centuries and there are some brilliant stories and memories to share. The tours take in stunning scenery, amazing architecture, and in-depth historical detail, which make it a truly unique experience.”

Tours cost £5 per person (all money supports the work of Barnsley Museum), to book a place call 01226 740203.
