Elsecar Art Installation

New Art in Elsecar! We are revealing three extraordinary art installations at Elsecar, each inspired by amazing Yorkshire stories...

The Mute Still Air by artist and composer Ed Carter is a powerful sound and light installation. It is inspired by our proud mining heritage and the impact that the Earl’s Steward Benjamin Biram’s inventions had on miners’ lives back in the mid-1800s.

Installed into a huge space inside The Ironworks, never normally seen by the public, the artwork creates an incredible almost-underground sense of airflow, light, sound, and atmosphere.

Part of our Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar partnership, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England, the installation is joined by Colour Forms, by Lenny and Whale, created for the National Trust Wentworth Castle Gardens, and part of The Flock, created by Planet Art for Wentworth Woodhouse.

The installations are on display until 27 June, are free, and The Mute Still Air is open 11.30am to 3.30pm at weekends and 12.30am to 3.30pm on weekdays.

We look forward to welcoming you to discover and enjoy some amazing art, places, and stories!
