1795 Newcomen Engine Demonstrations at the New Colliery

Discover the 1795 New Colliery and marvel at the ‘Elsecar Great Engine’, built at the direction of Earl Fitzwilliam. The oldest steam engine still in its original location anywhere, the engine is one of the world’s greatest monuments to the Industrial Revolution.

The New Colliery is open 7 days a week to explore throughout the year (except in severe weather), but on our Open Days, you’ll be able to talk to our guides, peer down its deep mineshaft, see inside the engine house and witness the ‘Great Engine’ in action.

Demonstrations will take place at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. The demonstrations will also be taking place on Sunday 20 May and Sunday 3 and 17 June.

Free - £2 suggested donation to witness demonstrations from inside the engine house.
